1. What do I need?
Choosing the right equipment for a security camera system is of paramount importance. Factors such as available lighting, depth of view field, and detail required in the images will determine which cameras are best suited for the job. Too often, those specifications are passed over in search of the cheapest unit. I hate to say it, but we all know the adage about price and quality, and securing your business or protecting assets is not a place to cut corners.
The type of equipment you need depends on the assets you want to protect. A typical retail business should have cameras monitoring cash transactions, freight doors, and customer lobby areas. Residential systems usually cover driveways and doors, but can be used to monitor garages and outbuildings as well. Surveillance cameras are the answer to “Who came in, who went out, and what did they go out with?”
Each location is unique, but generally speaking, all surveillance camera systems will need a camera multiplexer or processor, a recording device, and a means to monitor the images. Sounds simple enough, but now the choices begin: Digital or analog tape? Color or black and white? Can I use covert type cameras? Do I need remote monitoring over the internet? How many days storage should I have? Do I need battery back up? Is there enough light or should I use an infrared camera? What about wireless units? How much image resolution is enough to do the job? By considering all these questions, we can narrow the product choices down considerably. For each component, there are dozens of choices available, but only a few are perfect for a given application.
That is the first step in purchasing a surveillance system, and precisely why you should call FSS for a free consultation. We will visit with you to determine your needs, survey the location for field of view and lighting, and explain the differences in equipment options. We can guide you through the choices to custom design a system that fits your exact needs, because we believe that an informed customer will always make the best decisions. [ back
